Teddy Bears

Teddy bears are similar to baby dolls in that children love to hold and care for both of them. They have become culturally significant as evidenced by Winnie-the-Pooh, the bear that Christopher Robin took with him in his adventures. Children flock to the adorable bundles of soft material and stuffing. A few vantage points to discuss collectible teddy bears will be looked at.

One way to look at the modern teddy is through the lens of production. In this format, you can see the various materials and construction efforts that all go into the modern edition of that early 1900s classic. Typically, teddy bears are mass produced in China or Indonesia with materials that can range from goat hair, to alpaca pelts, to any large number of synthesized materials. However, mass production is not the only method of production and there are some small-scale, more personalized production plants around the world.

Although mass produced, there is also a collector and antique’s market for the handmade teddy bears. This market is derived from the creative capacity of individuals who will scrounge and find the materials necessary to fabricate a bear from old, already utilized materials. This bear is a historical marvel and will typically sell for more due to the obvious time investment made into the bear.
